Reference Management with RefWorks

Using Refworks Citation Manger

The following information is from the Using Refworks Writing Tools Add-Ons from the Refworks Libguide from ProQuest. You can get started with RCM easily and view the formatting of your in-text citations, footnotes and bibliography – all while you are writing your paper.

How to install RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM):

1. Within Microsoft Word, go to the Insert tab.

2. Then find the link for labeled Get Add-ins or possibly Store with a shopping bag icon.

3. Search for RefWorks. RefWorks Citation Manager will be listed. Select Add to install. There will be a pop-up asking you to agree to the license terms and privacy policy, and then it opens in the right sidebar.

Note:

Log into RefWorks. Synchronizing data with your RefWorks account may take a few moments, especially on your first login.  You’ll notice that an RCM option showed up on your menu bar. Clicking that will bring up the menu for opening the RCM sidebar.

Tip:  In most cases, there is no need to log out of RCM when you are not using it.  If you are using RCM on a public computer without a personal login, you should log out of RCM when you complete your work.  If someone does gain access to a system with your RefWorks library logged in to RCM, they will not be able to change anything in your account since RCM doesn’t have any features to edit your items.

Changing Citation Style

You can change your citation style in the middle of creating a document. Go back to the menu, select Citation Style. From that box, choose a new  citation style, and then Update.

Inserting Citations with RCM

1. To cite a reference, put your cursor where you would like the citation to go. In RCM, hover over the reference you would like to cite. Click “Cite This,” and the inline citation will be added to your document, and if you have the feature turned on, the reference will be added to your bibliography.

2. You can also click “Edit this” to configure whether to change the page numbers and whether to include the author or date. You can add a prefix or suffix to the reference. And finally, if the format supports both, you can choose whether to cite as in-text or a footnote. Once you’ve made your adjustments, click Insert Citation to add the citation.

Note: Here you can see that the citation has been added both to the text and to the bibliography. If you click the reference within the text, a box will appear around it, and the option to edit or delete the reference will appear in RCM. The box is only there because I have clicked the reference. Usually it will look like any other text in your document.

Suppose you delete a citation and the reference isn’t cited elsewhere. In that case, it will automatically be removed from your bibliography (if you have turned on the option to update your bibliography automatically.
