Online Research Tutorial: Brainstorming: Finding a topic: Exploring Background information

Exploring your topic: Background information

Find background information

Now that you have decided on a topic, it's time to investigate it a little closer.  Here are a few tips to help you find background information on your topic.

  • Look up your topic in an encyclopedia. The library recommends using Credo Reference, Gale Virtual Reference, and Sage eReference Encyclopedias to get background information on your topic.
  • Check for references/citations in the bibliography at the end of each encyclopedia entry to expand your search.  Citations will help you find out what others are discussing about your topic, and illustrate how an author can incorporate sources into their texts.
  • This is a good point to use Google to research your topic.  An internet search is a great place to explore your topic, find out what others are saying about your topic, and get basic information on your topic.  BUT!  Be careful, anyone can publish on the internet, so be sure to evaluate your sources!
  • Consult your textbook or ask a librarian to help you find reference materials for additional background information.
